Why Does My Tooth Hurt When I Bite Down?

Pain with chewing deserves an examination, even when it comes and goes. A crack, decay, a restoration problem, or inflammation can feel similar, so the symptom alone cannot identify the treatment.

At a glance

  • Notice whether pain occurs as you bite, release pressure, or drink something cold.
  • Avoid repeatedly testing the tooth on hard food.
  • Call promptly for persistent pain; facial swelling or fever makes the concern more urgent.

The timing of pain is a useful clue

A cracked tooth can hurt during chewing or when biting pressure releases. The discomfort may be intermittent and hard to locate. A tooth that looks intact in a mirror can still need attention.

Describe what triggers the pain rather than trying to name the diagnosis. For example, tell the office whether it started after biting something hard, whether there is a lost filling, and whether hot or cold drinks also cause discomfort.

What an examination can clarify

The dentist may inspect the tooth and nearby restorations, check how the teeth meet, and use appropriate tests or X-rays. A normal-looking surface does not settle every question about a crack. The findings determine whether a restoration, further investigation, or specialist assessment is appropriate.

Ask which tooth is involved, what evidence supports the diagnosis, and what the next step is if the cause is not clear at the first visit.

Until the tooth is checked

Choose foods that do not provoke the tooth and avoid chewing hard objects. Do not file the tooth, place aspirin against it, or try to attach a broken piece with household glue. Ask a pharmacist or clinician about suitable pain relief if needed, especially if you take other medicines.

Pain relief does not repair a crack or remove an infection. Keep the examination appointment even if discomfort temporarily eases.
