Temporary Dental Crown Care Between Appointments

A temporary crown protects a prepared tooth while the final restoration is being made. Follow the treating dentist's instructions and keep the planned fitting appointment, even if the temporary feels comfortable.

At a glance

  • A temporary restoration is part of an unfinished treatment plan.
  • Ask about eating and cleaning around the specific crown before leaving the visit.
  • A loose crown, an uneven bite, or increasing pain needs a call.

Before leaving the preparation visit

Confirm which tooth has the temporary and when you should return. If your mouth is numb, ask when it is safe to eat so that you do not bite your lip or cheek. Get the office's instructions for cleaning around the crown and a number to call if it loosens.

A short written checklist is useful if several teeth were treated or you are helping a family member manage appointments.

Eating and cleaning between visits

Hard or sticky foods can damage or dislodge a crown. Avoid using the treated tooth to test whether the temporary is strong enough. Continue oral hygiene gently and follow the team's demonstration for flossing around that restoration.

Do not stop cleaning the area altogether because it feels unfamiliar. If you cannot clean comfortably, ask for guidance rather than trying a sharp household tool.

If the crown comes off or the bite feels wrong

Contact the treating office if the temporary becomes loose or comes away. Save the piece in a clean container and bring it with you. Do not use household glue or assume the final fitting can proceed normally without telling the team.

Report a bite that feels high, worsening pain, or persistent sensitivity. Swelling or fever warrants prompt advice; breathing or swallowing difficulty requires emergency medical care.

Preparing for the final fitting

At the next appointment, explain any symptoms you noticed and whether the temporary loosened. Ask how the final restoration should be maintained and when the bite should be rechecked if something feels different.

If you need to reschedule, call before the appointment so the dentist can advise on the temporary. Do not turn a short interval between visits into an open-ended delay. Urban Dental Care's crown page explains the broader evaluation and treatment process.
